The story of Sainte Dévote is at the heart of Monaco's identity. Celebrated every 27 January, she is the Patron Saint of Monaco. After her martyrdom and execution, her body was rescued by the faithful and placed in a boat. Guided by a dove, the boat miraculously landed on the shores of Monaco.
The many miracles attributed to Saint Dévote aroused the envy of a fisherman who tried to steal her relics. In retaliation, the Monegasque fishermen confiscated and burnt her boat. Since then, Sainte Dévote has been considered the protector of the Principality.
In 1924, Prince Louis II of Monaco instituted the tradition of symbolically setting the boat ablaze. At the end of the ceremony, children are invited to retrieve the boat's nails from its ashes, which are said to bring good luck and protection.
